Motor Activity Training Program (MATP)
Empowering athletes with high support needs through movement, sport, and connection.
Motor Activity Training Program, or MATP for short, is the Special Olympics movement-based sport program for athletes with profound intellectual disabilities who have high support needs. Using skill stations where athletes take part in sport-related activities that develop their mobility, dexterity, striking, kicking, and balance, this program also involves group games where athletes can work and interact with others to develop their skills. All MATP activities are modified to each athlete’s needs, interests, and motivations. MATP athletes can train towards their MATP Challenge Day, where MATP athletes showcase their unique achievements to family and friends.
During the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, an MATP Demo will be hosted at Ridder Arena on Wednesday, June 24th, bringing the Motor Activity Training Program to the national stage for the first time in Special Olympics history since the inaugural USA Games in 2006!
This unique event will be an opportunity for athletes with high support needs to participate in a supportive, station-based experience designed to help them achieve their personal bests. Stations will be set up across the arena—including Mobility, Kicking, Dexterity, and Striking—giving athletes the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and celebrate progress in a fun, encouraging, and non-competitive environment. At the conclusion of the session, athletes will be recognized with a ribbon, marking a memorable milestone in an event that showcases the power of inclusion. Spectators are highly encouraged to stop by and cheer on these incredible athletes as they take the spotlight!
Time: 1:00pm – 3:00pm
Who is Invited to Register?
We invite individuals who require specialized equipment or one-on-one assistance to navigate physical spaces. This program is the perfect fit for:
- Athletes with Complex Needs: Those with multiple disabilities (e.g., combined physical, sensory, and intellectual challenges).
- Early Starters: Children ages 6 and up who are ready to begin their physical development journey.
- Non-Competitive Movers: Individuals who may find the noise, speed, or rigid rules of traditional sports overwhelming and prefer a structured, supportive environment.
Are there “Qualifications”?
There are no “try-outs” for MATP. The primary qualification is a demonstrated need for an adapted program that falls outside the scope of standard Special Olympics sports. If an athlete cannot safely or functionally participate in a regulated sport (like basketball or track) even with minor adaptations, MATP is their home.
