Traveling to the Twin Cities:
- Airport Information: Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) is one of the largest and most efficient airports in the Midwest, serving as a major hub for domestic and international travel. The airport has two terminals, both located a short distance from the University of Minnesota. If you are planning on flying to Minnesota for the Games, we strongly recommend planning your trip through this airport.
- Amtrak Information: For families traveling to the 2026 USA Games, Amtrak offers an affordable and comfortable alternative to driving or flying—a relaxing way to enjoy the scenery while traveling directly to the Saint Paul Union Depot, just a short trip from the University of Minnesota and other Games venues.
Navigating the Twin Cities is easy, thanks to a variety of transportation options that connect you to key destinations, including Games venues, downtown attractions, and Mall of America. The most convenient way to travel is the METRO system, which offers two light rail lines–the Blue and Green lines–and several rapid bus lines with fast, frequent, all-day service. Adult fares are $2 all day, every day; those who qualify can pay $1 fares, which include 2½ hours of bus and train rides.
The Blue Line connects downtown Minneapolis to the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and Mall of America, making it a great choice for travelers flying in for the Games. The Green Line runs between downtown Minneapolis and downtown Saint Paul, with several stops at the University of Minnesota—one of the Games’ hub venues, where competitions, special events, and athlete housing will be located. Both lines provide frequent service, making it simple to explore the region without a car.
In addition to the METRO network of buses and trains, there are bike-friendly streets, and plenty of rideshare options. Whether you’re heading to a competition venue or checking out local attractions, getting around is convenient, affordable, and accessible for all visitors.
Getting to the Games from your hotel:
- By Car: Visitors driving to the University of Minnesota campus will find several parking ramps available for a minimal fee. Each competition venue has a parking ramp located within close walking distance.
- Using Public Transportation: Minneapolis and St. Paul offer a robust Metro Transit system including buses and light rail, with stops near many venues. We recommend using Metro Transit’s Trip Planner to help navigate the public transportation system.
Getting around at the Games:
- The 2026 Special Olympics USA Games at the University of Minnesota will be a true “Walking Games,” with venues conveniently located across campus and within easy walking distance. To support accessibility, the University’s existing campus shuttle will also be available for use throughout the event.
Families visiting for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games will find plenty to explore in the Twin Cities. A must-visit destination is the iconic Mall of America, home to world-class shopping, dining, and entertainment—including an indoor theme park and aquarium. During Games week, the Mall will host special USA Games programming, and in November 2025, a dedicated USA Games store will open, offering exclusive merchandise.
Sports fans can catch a game from one of Minnesota’s professional teams, including the Minnesota Twins (MLB) at Target Field or Minnesota United FC (MLS) at Allianz Field. The summer season is packed with action, making it a great time to experience the region’s passion for sports.
The Twin Cities also boast a thriving arts and culture scene, with renowned theaters like the Guthrie Theater, a vibrant live music community, and must-visit museums like the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the Chain of Lakes, Minnehaha Falls, or the Mississippi River trails for scenic walks, biking, and water activities.
