ESPN Unified Sports Challenge

One Night. One Team. One Unified Community.

What is Unified Sports?

Unified Sports is a Special Olympics program that promotes social inclusion by joining people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team for shared training and competition. Inspired by the principle that playing together builds friendship and understanding, teams consist of people of similar age and ability to make practices fun and games exciting. Sponsored globally by ESPN since 2013, over a million people worldwide participate in Unified Sports, breaking down stereotypes and sweeping away false ideas. Furthermore, through Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools® programming—active in more than 10,800 schools across 50 U.S. states, D.C., and Puerto Rico—youth leaders and educators are mobilized to create inclusive environments. By combining sports, inclusive clubs, and youth leadership, this initiative engages up to 19.5 million young people, successfully increasing acceptance of all abilities while reducing stigma and bullying.
